A fetal pig is a great choice for dissection because the size of the organs make them easy to find and identify. It is also a very exciting dissection because a lot of the internal anatomy is similar to humans! It is fascinating to see how all the organs fit and work together.

Near the skin surface they may become painful and may have an inflamed appearance. Identification of an abscess at slaughter can cause the possible condemnation of the carcass and hence loss of earnings, therefore it is important to identify and treat abscesses as soon as they are noted.
Despite the fact that pigs are reputed to have excellent olfactory abilities, few studies have examined regions of the pig brain involved in the sense of smell. The present study provides an overview of the olfactory bulb, anterior olfactory nucleus, and piriform cortex of adult pigs using several approaches. Nissl, myelin, and Golgi stains were used to produce a general overview of the organization of the regions and confocal microscopy was employed to examine 1 projection neurons, 2 GABAergic local circuit neurons that express somatostatin, parvalbumin, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, or calretinin, 3 neuromodulatory fibers cholinergic and serotonergicand 4 glia astrocytes and microglia.
