There, I said it! And as a straight, cisgender Afro-Caribbean woman, I noticed how my privilege shielded me from certain challenges as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. As organizations rooted in Christianity, sororities follow certain traditions that underscore heteronormative and feminine ideas about women that make it difficult to fit the mold.
Black Greek-letter sororities and fraternities have been a pivotal part of African American history and culture since the early 20th century. Launched on the campuses of historically black colleges, these organizations have been a central resource for support and service in the educational advancement and strengthening of social bonds among black students, entrepreneurs and professionals, especially when the organizations expanded to majority white institutions of higher learning. Also, they were a way to combat racism, as many campus organization memberships were exclusionary to students and professionals of color.
Thetas are very chill. Some of my best friends are in this sorority and they are definitely the funny girls who love to be silly, don't care what others think about them, and just have a really good time. I haven't heard a word about them hazing, so I am guessing that if they do it's mild and minimal compared to some of the others. They seem like they are very open minded people and care about WAY more than just partying.
