Inthe University of Kansas received a federal grant to establish an East Asian studies program. From the beginning, the Libraries supported this program through the collection of East Asian materials. The EAL staff acquires and processes materials for the collections, and provides reference and research support to the KU community and beyond.
Today the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilization offers a wide range of academic and research programs on the graduate and post-graduate levels, providing academicians and researchers with a multitude of options from which to choose their specializations. The Center for East Asian Studies, an interdisciplinary unit composed of faculty members whose teaching and research focus is on East Asia, initiates, organizes, and coordinates East Asian Studies course offerings and supports the expansion and enrichment of East Asian Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Faculty research on East Asian Studies includes the humanities and the social sciences with particular strength in pre-modern, modern, and post-modern East Asian civilizations.

The collections are strongest for the countries of East and Southeast Asia, and there are rich holdings of English language materials on Asia.
The East Asian Collection comprises print and electronic books and journals in Chinese and Japanese languages. The Collection focuses on the arts and humanities, social sciences and architectural history. However, the Collection also contains a wealth of online resources that University of Melbourne staff and students can explore from anywhere in the world.
