Proper life skills are vitally important to the emotional and mental development of young men transitioning into adulthood. Without them, teens lack the chances to closely see important aspects of trust, honesty, communication, boundaries, and compromise as they exist in a person to person basis. We would even go as far as to say that without certain life skills it becomes increasingly difficult for any young person to live a full, happy, and engaged life.
At the Claudia Black Young Adult Center, we help young adults become more successful in their lives, and life skills are an important part of this process. The overall goal is to help them become independent in making their own decisions in order to lead fulfilling lives. The Claudia Black Young Adult Center in Wickenburg, Arizona, provides an intensive, experientially based day treatment program for young adults ages 18 — 26 who are struggling with unresolved emotional trauma, addiction, have a dual diagnosis, or who have failed past addiction treatments. Claudia Black — renowned author, speaker, and trainer who has been working with family systems and addictive disorders since the s — is the clinical architect of the Claudia Black Young Adult Center.
By Anne Ford May 1, The good news for Ripa and those who agree with her: NBPL is just one of many that have launched classes aimed at teaching young adults how to balance a checkbook, cook a meal, sew on a button, shop for auto insurance, and perform other necessities of life. Libraries in Birmingham, Alabama; Bozeman, Montana; Los Angeles; New York City; Pittsburgh; Tucson, Arizona, and many other locations are offering these classes, which vary in their content but which are almost always marketed as Adulting or a variant thereof.
Here, participants can receive one-to-one support and attention to help them define and work toward their goals. Life coaching provides greater individualized support to participants crossing developmental and cognitive thresholds. Staff helps participants define and work toward goals, creating small action steps that are accomplished and measured through a system of accountability.
All students have their life management skills levels assessed upon beginning the program in order to determine the appropriate level of services. Our goal is that each young adult in our program develops the life skills needed to transition to independent living. Some students may need more or less of the following services based on their individual level of independence.
When you transition out of care you'll need to know valuable life skills like cooking, cleaning, communication, and budgeting. There are several ways to gain skills and grow your abilities, while still being supported by community groups. It's normal to feel unprepared or overwhelmed. It's important to stay connected to supportive adults and peers while you transition and after you're on your own.
