Since the Black Lives Matter movement gained national attention inorganizers have pushed to prioritize voices of black queer and transgender women. Two of the three founders identify as queerand along with drawing attention to numerous brutal murders of transgender women of colorthey have also driven conversations on how anti-black portrayals in media and popular culture can have serious consequences on black queer and trans women's lives. One such portrayal is the experience of a group of black lesbians who were arrested and charged with felony gang assault and attempted murder in They'd gotten into a fight in New York City's Greenwich Village neighborhood with a man who they say catcalled and threatened them as they walked down the street.
A large part of the LGBT community is now being made up of black lesbian celebrities who are trying to make a difference and pioneering for more equality and rights that will help to protect the community and its interests. They are standing firm when it comes to their voices being heard and the attention to some of the problems that they face, those including sexual problems minorities are faced with, as well as equal rights. Whether they are sharing their stories through books, or even incorporating them into movies, here are some of the most prominent black lesbian celebrities.
Pride month is nearly over, and there are lists upon lists of books LGBTQ folks should be reading circulating around the internet. A wonderful exception is this list by Danika Ellishead librarian over at the Lesbrary. Some you will recognize, some you may not.
Data for this exploratory study were gathered from a series of semi-structured ethnographic interviews with self-identified Black lesbians. Results suggested that those who had been in relationships with White lesbians reported more frequent experiences of discrimination that influenced their later decision to seek a Black lesbian partner for their next love relationship. Reactions toward lesbian community events ranged from avoidance to determined participation in response to feelings of alienation and racism. Also, Black lesbians perceived the African-American community to be conservative in their views on homosexuality.
While the America we live in today is more tolerant and accepting than decades and centuries past, we still have a long and arduous road ahead. Despite false claims that we live in a "post-racial" society, African Americans still face prejudice and systemic racism regularly. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender LGBT people still combat discrimination and are denied access to basic protections.

Additionally, black lesbians deal with the unique challenges of being African-American women in LGBTQ communities, in a society which prefers to commodify identity.
