Cardiac Rhythms - Step 1 - Rhythm Analysis Introduction When analyzing cardiac rhythm strips it is important to recognize what the cardiac complex represents and what is considered normal versus abnormal. The technique and interpretation of cardiac rhythms is a combination of science and art.

Assuming that most of you reading this blog do not have that much time, please allow me to share what I have discovered in my years teaching ECGs to make the process more simple — and maybe even enjoyable. I imagine it is understood that learning all of ECG interpretation is going to take more than 10 minutes of your time and that it is not quite so easy. To be proficient, it will take a bit of effort.
Rhythm interpretation is an important part of healthcare in EMS. Trained medical personnel can determine different treatment options based on the cardiac rhythm of a patient. There are many common heart rhythms that are part of a few different categories, sinus arrhythmia, atrial arrhythmia, ventricular arrhythmia. This represents the conduction of the atria of the heart, the speed at which they are able to conduct an electrical impulse.
To ensure you receive the best appropriate care, you cardiologist may recommend a series of tests to measure your heart's function. Before completing any of the following tests, the cardiology staff will discuss with you what the test entails and what it measures. Once the test is completed, your cardiologist will explain the results and whether future care is needed.
For many nursing students and new nurses EKG interpretation can be intimidating, to say the least. I remember my first day as a nurse in the ICU. To say that I was overwhelmed is a pretty big understatement.
For each cardiac rhythm category we provide one or more ECG tracings. A synopsis of the cardiac rhythm dysrhythmia is provided and electronic calipers can be used to study each tracing. A basic EKG course is available using the link below.

NCCI identifies code pairs that are never reimbursed separately and code pairs that can only be reimbursed separately in certain circumstances identified by the appropriate modifier.
There are two different rates that can be determined on an ECG. The atrial rate is indicated by the frequency of the P waves. The ventricular rate is indicated by the frequency of the QRS complexes.
Electrocardiography is a fundamental part of cardiovascular assessment. It is an essential tool for investigating cardiac arrhythmias and is also useful in diagnosing cardiac disorders such as myocardial infarction. Familiarity with the wide range of patterns seen in the electrocardiograms of normal subjects and an understanding of the effects of non-cardiac disorders on the trace are prerequisites to accurate interpretation.
